Engaging

Fatherhood is a contact sport. You can’t raise your kids from a distance. If you want to understand who they are, see their needs, and help them grow, you have to meet them where they are. That will look different with each child and in each season, but the goal is always the same: connecting, engaging, and being present.

One of the most obvious—and fun—ways to do this is simply to play with them. That comes naturally to children, but as fathers, sometimes we have to work at it a little. In Chapter 7, “Becoming Childish Again,” we look at what play looks like and why it’s so important.

Next, in Chapter 8, “The Gift of Presence,” we talk about how valuable our presence is in our kids’ lives. Amid the hustle and chaos of life, it’s easy to forget that what our kids want the most from us really isn’t that complicated: They just need us to be there for them.
